Middle school can be an exciting time of growth, but it can also bring new social challenges. Friendships become more complex, communication changes, peer acceptance can feel increasingly important, and navigating social situations—both in person and online—can sometimes feel overwhelming.
Bloom & Belong is a supportive social skills group designed to help middle school girls strengthen their social confidence, develop healthier friendships, and build the skills needed to navigate everyday social situations successfully.
At Mindwell Gardens, we believe girls thrive when they feel connected, understood, and confident being themselves. Bloom & Belong provides a welcoming environment where girls can learn, practice, and strengthen social skills while connecting with peers in a supportive setting.
Group sessions incorporate discussion, activities, real-life examples, and opportunities to practice skills that girls can use at school, at home, with friends, and online.
Participants learn skills for starting and maintaining two-way conversations, actively listening, asking questions, finding common interests, recognizing social cues, and balancing how much they talk and share.
Girls explore what healthy friendships look like and how to recognize qualities such as kindness, respect, trust, reciprocity, and shared interests. We also discuss navigating friendship changes, feeling left out, and finding peers who are a good social fit.
The group helps girls become more comfortable expressing themselves, joining conversations and activities, handling unfamiliar social situations, and developing confidence without feeling that they need to change who they are in order to fit in.
Texting, group chats, and social media add another layer to middle school relationships. Girls learn about digital communication, group-chat etiquette, texting boundaries, privacy, and interpreting the tone of messages to help prevent misunderstandings.
Participants learn practical ways to respond to rumors, gossip, conflict, and other challenging peer situations without unnecessarily escalating the problem.
Girls practice calm and effective ways to respond to teasing, verbal put-downs, exclusion, and inappropriate online behavior. The group also emphasizes recognizing when a situation requires help from a trusted adult.
Participants work on noticing verbal and nonverbal cues, considering another person's perspective, recognizing how others may be feeling, and adjusting their communication based on the social situation.
Girls learn that healthy relationships include both kindness toward others and respect for themselves. We practice communicating needs, setting appropriate boundaries, saying no, handling disagreements, and speaking up in respectful and confident ways.
Bloom & Belong may be a good fit for middle school girls who would benefit from additional support with making or maintaining friendships, conversational skills, social confidence, understanding social cues, managing peer conflict, navigating group dynamics, or communicating effectively online.
A girl does not need to be experiencing significant social difficulties to benefit. The group can also provide a positive space for girls who simply want to strengthen their interpersonal skills, build confidence, and connect with peers.
Learning about social skills is only part of the process—having opportunities to practice them is equally important. The group setting allows participants to try new skills, receive supportive feedback, learn from one another, and experience positive peer interactions in real time.
Our goal is for each girl to leave Bloom & Belong with practical skills she can use in everyday life, greater confidence in navigating relationships, and a stronger sense that she can find meaningful connections while still being herself.
To help create a comfortable and engaging experience, group size is limited to 8 participants. Keeping the group small allows each girl opportunities to participate, practice skills, ask questions, and feel heard.
While participation and engagement are encouraged, girls are never forced to share personal information before they feel comfortable. Respect, kindness, privacy, and consideration for other group members are emphasized throughout the group experience.
Bloom & Belong is an ongoing group, and new participants may join as space becomes available and when the group is determined to be an appropriate fit.
Before joining, families participate in an intake process to learn more about the group, discuss the child's needs and goals, review group expectations, and determine whether Bloom & Belong is the right fit.
Insurance coverage for group services varies by plan. Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield (Anthem BCBS) and Anthem is accepted for group therapy, with copay or coinsurance amounts depending on the individual's policy and benefits.
For families using out-of-network benefits, a monthly superbill may be provided upon request for possible reimbursement from their insurance company. Reimbursement is determined by the individual's insurance plan and cannot be guaranteed.
The middle school years are an important time for developing the relationship skills and confidence that can carry into adolescence and adulthood. Bloom & Belong gives girls a supportive place to practice those skills, navigate social challenges, build meaningful connections, and grow in confidence.
